Version 0.9.0

So, uhh... it's been almost 2 years.

The future of Silhouette Showdown.

First of all, thank you for playing. I don't know how to say it without sounding generic, but it's generic because it's true. I truly appreciate every player and commenter on the game. Even though I did not often work on Silhouette Showdown, seeing people enjoy (or discuss) the game always put a smile on my face.

As some of you may know, I have unfortunately lost a lot of motivation to work on Silhouette Showdown, mostly due to a difficult year, followed by many different projects. I've always still wanted to add the singleplayer mode to SilSho, so with it finally being released, I think it's the end of my work on this game. I think that overpromising has been a bit of an issue with this game, it's not that I don't think I can create something I want to create, it's just that there are a lot of obstacles, even outside of game development that prevent me from making the game in a reasonable amount of time. Even though this is quite a big update, it's mostly the result of large and rare bursts of development, not something i worked on every week for 2 years.

Without promising anything, my plan is to clean up the code a little bit, it's a mess, since I started this project when I was still a beginner. After that's done, I will release the final update with some possible balance changes, bug fixes and enemy AI/code optimizations. After that the plan is to open the project on gitHub, so that players can freely modify the game however they want, if they know their way around Godot 3. More on that once that is ready.

If anyone wants to help me put online multiplayer functionality in the game or help me port the game to Godot 4, that would be amazing, but if that does not happen soon, I will leave that up to any potential modders. From now on I will work mostly on new games, my game Monster Battlegrounds, and some other games that I'm developing together with a team called Studio Meebly. So keep your eyes open for that.

I'm also always open for pixel art commissions, large and small. I'm very approachable, so hit me up on discord (weentermg) or mail (weentertheperson@gmail.com), or else I might have to sell out and become a mobile developer ;). Thank you for playing and thank you for reading! Here are the patch notes:

Silhouette Showdown - Version 0.9 Patch notes

All new singleplayer mode! 2 levels with speedrun timers and medals. They teach the player about basic movement and combat.

5 New stages:

  • New stage: Steel beams
  • New stage: Shadow of the factory
  • New stage: Dumping grounds
  • New stage: Moon: on this stage, gravity is much lower.
  • New stage: Winter by the factory: this stage has a slippery floor.

Many new settings, including:

  • Turning on only certain items
  • Adjusting the item spawn rate
  • Turning items on by default
  • Turning walls on by default
  • Moon physics on all stages
  • Ice physics on all stages

Balance Changes:

  • There is a slight buffer window for attacks now, to make landing tight attack strings more in the player's control.
  • There is a slight buffer window for jumps now, making it easier to time your jumps perfectly after landing on the ground.
  • Jab and crouch attack hitboxes extended to the inside of the player, allowing players to hit these attacks even when standing inside the opponent.
  • Jab now completely ignores parries, and deals damage as if the opponent was not defending.
  • Jab now resets all vertical momentum of an opponent, preventing an escape by jumping.
  • Jab will not halt the player's momentum anymore, making it easier to combo with it after a dash.
  • Kick damage 6 > 10
  • Kick deals less damage and knockback when hitting with the late hitbox.
  • Crouch attack hitstun increased 14f > 23f
  • Dash attack damage 6 > 8
  • Dash attack weak hitbox hitstun increased 11f > 16f
  • Dash attack hitbox is smaller now
  • Air kick damage 5 > 6
  • The hitbox of air-kick is now also a hurtbox, meaning that uppercuts can more easily hit an air-kicking opponent.
  • Down-air attack damage 6 > 8
  • Down-air attack deals more hitstun when hitting an airborne opponent.
  • Uppercut is now invincible for slightly longer (frames 1-5 instead of 1-3)
  • Uppercut hitbox is now slightly wider (1 pixel)
  • When holding up while throwing an item, you can gain a small movement boost upwards. You can use this if you really need to stall in the air for a bit when holding an item.

AI Improvements:

  • Higher level CPUs will attack more often
  • CPUs will use items more often if they pick them up
  • CPUs will now slide at the same rate as the player

Bug Fixes/Improvements:

  • Fixed a bug where players could fall through the infinite falling stage if they airdodged.
  • Compressed some large files to drastically decrease the file size of desktop versions of the game. This should also drastically increase loading times for the game on browser.
  • Fixed the completely messed up controls on gamepads
  • Color and CPU level selection is stored when loading a new stage.
  • A lot of other small bug fixes that I didn't keep track of.

Visual changes:

  • The stage backgrounds are now more layered and detailed. If you prefer the old backgrounds, you can turn this off in the settings.
  • When loading a stage, the stage name is displayed.
  • Parry has a brighter visual.
  • A lot of other small visual changes that I didn't keep track of.

New Items:

  • Grenade! it explodes when hitting an opponent or any surface, the explosion can damage all players within it's reach.
  • Running shoes! These make the player run faster and kick attacks deal more damage. Kick (strong hitbox 10 > 14 damage) (weak hitbox 8 > 11 damage), Air kick (6 > 10 damage), Dive kick (8 > 13 damage)
  • Healing kit! When picking it up, a player consumes the healing kit and gains anywhere between 13 and 25 hp back.
